Bernice Goodspeed: a woman of many talents and interests

American Bernice Goodspeed was a woman with many different interests. She was a cultural anthropologist deeply interested in pre-Columbian archeology. Goodspeed and her artist husband (Carl Pappe) opened Galeria De Arte in Taxco, Mexico in the 1930s and sold his work along with pre-Columbian artifacts. And, of course, Goodspeed designed and created jewelry and tableware and sold it through the gallery.
Bernice Goodspeed was a writer too. An article in the women’s section of The Modesto Bee newspaper on September 20, 1956 (scroll down the page to “Paul Coopers return from Mexico trip”) mentions a visit with Goodspeed by a cousin she had not seen in 30 years, along with Goodspeed’s book Mexican Tales.
