Hallmark or maker’s mark?
Many collectors of vintage silver, Mexican or otherwise, frequently use the term “hallmark” when they actually mean maker’s mark (I’m guilty too!). I was reminded to keep my terms straight the other day when I came across the Mexican Makers’ Marks page at MODbaubles, which has photographs of about 30 different Mexican makers’ marks. As the site points out, hallmarks indicate metal content while a maker’s marks tell you who designed or manufactured a piece.
Speaking of MODbaubles, they have a wonderful ebony and sterling silver set (#182) for men by Sigi Pineda: tie clip, cufflinks, and belt buckle. “All are marked with Sigi’s early mark, as well as design numbers, eagles, sterling, and made in Mexico. Circa 1950s.” Absolutely worth a look!
