In June 1952, Popular Mechanics published Mexico’s City of Silver by Michael Day. Reading an article such as this, written during the heyday of William Spratling, Los Castillo, and the other great designers and artisans working in Mexico, provides a contemporary perspective or feeling - very different from reading an article or book written many years later.
Intended for the Popular Mechanics audience that wants to know how things are made, the article explores techniques such as metales casados and mosaic inlay, and it’s accompanied by photographs of the silversmiths at work.
