William Spratling’s silver owl pin offered for sale

2009 July 2

If you’re a fan of William Spratling’s sterling silver jewelry, you’ve probably seen the famous owl pin– hard to miss since it’s on the cover of Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks! I’ve never seen one in person, but I’ve always loved this design.

An eBay seller with a very good reputation is offering this pin, made in the early 1940s.  I have seen this pin with amethyst cabochhons (here’s an example of another one for sale, and here is another), but never with faceted amethyst. The seller thinks obisidian was originally used for the eyes of this particular pin and that someone later substituted the amethyst.

Here is another William Spratling owl pin (not for sale!), from the collection of Erik Yang.

Take a look at Erik’s collection of vintage Mexican silver – it’s quite wonderful. He’s got pieces by many of the maestros – I’m totally envious!
