Fish have long been a popular motif in Mexican jewelry and can be documented going back at least 400 years. In their book Mexican Jewelry, Mary L. Davis and Greta Pack provide illustrations of fish jewelry (including one piece by William Spratling and one by Matilde Poulat) and mention, in particular, the well-known “wiggling fish” made of “funnel-like sections loosely telescoped together and held by fine wires, the scales engraved to give a glistening surface, the movement perfectly recreated by the construction.”
