While vintage Taxco silver jewelry hasn’t had much airtime on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow (see appraisal links below), it’s still fun to watch the program because, well, you just never know. Roadshow is one of the most popular programs on PBS and is without doubt the reason why so many other networks now offer programs that look at people’s “junk” to determine if any of it actually falls in the category of “treasure.”

It’s not often that the Antiques Roadshow “veil” is lifted, but recently Current.org published a must-read story that gives us a glimpse of the relationship between the appraisers and the show’s producing station, WBGH. Read Conflicting appraisals: Minutes on Roadshow are pay enough for some here.

Antonio Pineda sterling silver flatware service; Photograph: John Moran Auctioneers

From the auctioneer’s description:

Antonio Pineda was born in Taxco, Mexico to an old Taxquenian family in 1919. At the age of 14 he apprenticed with William Spratling. After eight years in Spratling’s studio, and becoming a master silversmith in his own right, Pineda opened his own workshop. His international reputation was established when his work was exhibited along side that of Georg Jensen and other renowned modernist silversmiths at the 1944 exhibition of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Pineda’s entire body of work displayed at that seminal show was purchased by Gump’s, which established a long standing relationship between Pineda and the high-end retailer. In 1953 he won the Presidential Prize at the first National Silver Fair and by 1956 his operation employed over 160 people. Pineda founded the Silver Museum in Taxco in 1988.

Antonio Pineda is best known for his modernist jewelry designs incorporating gemstones in unusual and creative settings. Utilitarian pieces such as hollowware and flatware sets by Pineda are rare. Provenance: Property from a Private Arizona Collection

Estimated Price: $7,000 – $10,000. Condition: Weight does not include steel-bladed dinner knives. Very good condition overall. General light marks, scratches, rubbing and wear commensurate with age and use. Not monogrammed.

Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda

“Antonio Pineda (b. 1919) is renowned for translating design elements evocative of Mexico’s past into often-astounding modernist silver jewelry, sculpture, and tableware. Perhaps more than any of his talented counterparts, he has been able to abstract and refine, producing elegant, spare, and geometric works that evidence a profound respect for the wearer…The over two hundred remarkable Pineda objects illustrated in this volume reflect the artist’s intense imagination and quest for technical perfection.”
