Taxco Castillo Silver and Glass Plate
Taxco Castillo Mexican silver and glass art plate. The design is set into the surface of the plate and is comprised of pieces of thick cut and colored glass. The design is known as Azteca Pluma. Bottom of the plate is hallmarked; two gold disks inside the back glass design are inscribed “Taxco Castillo” and “Azteca Pluma.” 6 3/4″D. 9t oz. (with glass inlay included).

Brenda Schoenfeld: Taxco silver is in her DNA

You would be hard pressed to find many jewelry designers with a greater Mexican silver pedigree than Brenda Schoenfeld. Her uncles were the Taxco maestros Los Castillo. As she notes on her website, “Brenda’s formative years were an amalgam of artists, materials, form, detail and craftsmanship, a combination which significantly influenced her future. Brenda’s fascination with design was cultivated and nourished, while she explored her options in the renowned Taxco workshops.” How could she not grow up to create beautiful jewelry?

In the late 1980s Schoenfeld drew the attention of the fashion world as a designer and producer of hand-made belts inspired by jewelry. With access to her family’s workshops, she began making jewelry, eventually opening a boutique in Dallas, Texas. Soon her collection appeared in the most prestigious department stores and shops in North America. In 1996 Schoenfeld move to Italy. She began creating amazing designs in gold, working with artisans in Florence, but continued creating designs in silver handmade by Taxco artisans. Look for her marks on page 174 of Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks.

Rare Los Castillo Brooch Pin Taxco Mexico Sterling Silver (Jewelry)

Most people don’t automatically think of amazon.com when looking for vintage Mexican silver jewelry, but every so often some interesting pieces show up there. For example, here is a very interesting matched pair of vintage Los Castillo brooches. The seller’s description: They are dramatic pectoral chest ornament decorations to represent fish with a fertility motif. These are a dramatic matched pair of 2 Los Castillo Taxco Mexico Mexican pins or brooches that are configured to hang cojoined or they can they can be worn as two separate individual pins. These 2 brooches measure approximately 4 inches in length. There is a positive hook on the bottom of one, and a negative hole on the bottom of the other. It is signed on one pin, ”Los Castillo Taxco.” It is signed on the other pin, ”Sterling Made in Mexico 181. Condition: Very good with minimal wear. Click on the button for all of the details:

This auction lot of vintage Los Castillo table items includes, not surprisingly, one item with a parrot motif and inlaid stone. The parrot is one of Los Castillo’s best-known motifs, and the use of inlaid stone is a technique for which Los Castillo is well-known.

The three items marked by Los Castillo include a fish-form dish with hand hammered surface and rim set with enamel, a three footed bowl with cast enamel bird perched on rim, a copper parrot-form bottle opener with abalone shell set wings.

The technique of fusing together different metals, known as metales casados (married or mixed metals), is one for which Los Castillo is well-known. Los Castillo, one of the great families of Taxco silver, revived ancient techniques such as married metals and developed a reputation for great design and innovation.
