While vintage Taxco silver jewelry hasn’t had much airtime on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow (see appraisal links below), it’s still fun to watch the program because, well, you just never know. Roadshow is one of the most popular programs on PBS and is without doubt the reason why so many other networks now offer programs that look at people’s “junk” to determine if any of it actually falls in the category of “treasure.”

It’s not often that the Antiques Roadshow “veil” is lifted, but recently Current.org published a must-read story that gives us a glimpse of the relationship between the appraisers and the show’s producing station, WBGH. Read Conflicting appraisals: Minutes on Roadshow are pay enough for some here.

This is a classic vintage signed Margot de Taxco enamel and silver snake suite that’s on the auction block and will be sold tomorrow, November 20th:

Bidding for the suite has already begun. The suite is described as being by Margot de Mexico (a different silver company altogether), but has the Margot de Taxco marks. Here’s the auctioneer’s description for Lot# 3437:

Lot 3437: Margot de Mexico enameled silver snake suite
20th c., signed, no. 5554, incl. (1) necklace, (1) bracelet, (1) scarf clip and (2) earrings, 15″l (necklace), approx. 6 ozt. – Condition report: overall good, enamel good, some very minor imperfections, some evidence of age and handling. Estimate: 1,000-1,500

Margot van Voorhies Carr (Margot de Taxco), the American-born designer and entrepreneur who moved to Mexico in 1937, married Antonio Castillo (20 years her junior), and created the jewelry that is so loved by collectors, was a woman who was truly ahead of her time. One of the most productive artists working in mid-20th-century Taxco, Margot employed hundreds of artisans (including a notable number of women) and is most famous for her pieces using enamel on silver. She found inspiration in the Mayan aesthetic and Art Deco. Japanese motifs inspired Margot as well, which leads us to an upcoming auction of a fantastic Japanese-inspired enameled silver and ivory suite:

The auction is labeled “Margot de Mexico enameled silver and ivory suite,” but when you look at the photographs in the listing you’ll see the Margot de Taxco marks. (Margot de Mexico is not connected to Margot de Taxco.) Here is the auctioneer’s description for the lot:

Lot 3438: Margot de Mexico enameled silver and ivory suite
20th c., fish motif incorporating a netsuke, signed, no. 5847, incl. (1) necklace with pendant brooch and (2) earrings, approx. 20″l (necklace), approx. 6 ozt. – Condition report: overall good, enamel good, brooch lacking pin, some very minor imperfections, some evidence of age and handling
Estimate: 600-800

Often it seems that the fantastic cufflinks (and tie pins) created by the best Mexican silver designers of the mid-twentieth century fly under the radar a bit, perhaps not commanding quite the same prices as vintage Mexican silver jewelry designed for women. If you poke around auction sites, eBay, flea markets, garage sales, and other places where collectors vintage Mexican silver jewelry is sold, you just might come across some nifty designs by the maestros, and very possibly some good bargains.

Among the vintage Mexican silver and mixed metals cufflinks currently for sale on eBay are those shown below. They’re enough to make you want to get some shirts with double cuffs or french cuffs. The Spratling pretzel cufflinks and the Margot de Taxco A.M. P.M. cufflinks, in particular, will add a bit of levity to any outfit!

Margot Van Voorhies was an American in the mid-twentieth century who went to Taxco, Mexico, and established a jewelry design business best known for exquisite enamel work.

These silver and enamel pieces by Margot de Taxco make up one of three lots of jewelry by Margot de Taxco that will be auctioned by Palm Beach Modern Auctions on April 30th. Pretty great looking!

This fascinating book relates the pains of her childhood and eventual refuge in Mexico, where she developed an artistic talent into the Margot de Taxco workshop, that employed hundreds of artisans, particularly including women. This beauty is offered in an auction listing by top-rated eBay seller hilandlass, who states that it is an early design, No. 5184.

From the seller’s description:

This necklace is made of heavy gauge repousse sterling silver and consists of a central panel (3-5/8″ long and width/drop of 2-3/8″) that is exquisitely detailed with a lovely orchestration of scroll flourishes, stylized ribbons and a multitude of dimensional demi sphere accents. The central panel is actually two separate brooches that can be worn together without the necklace, or as two separate brooches. The necklace consists of three separate lengths of silver repousse links that are made in a stylized ribbon motif ~ the necklace may be worn with the central panel, alone as a choker style necklace, or as two bracelets (see “size” paragraph for wearable lengths). All of the necklace components hook together ingeniously on the back which don’t show from the front, giving the necklace beautiful, uninterrupted design flow.

Margot Van Voorhies was an American in the mid-twentieth century who went to Taxco, Mexico, and established a jewelry design business best known for exquisite enamel work. Her jewelry is a favorite of collectors, loved for its originality, distinctiveness and crafsmanship. Margot was a true innovator and experimenter, which you can see in her silver and champlevé (an enameling technique) creations.
