On December 5th, the Rago Arts and Auction Center of Lambertville, NJ will hold a Jewelry & Silver Auction that feature two lots of jewelry of interest to collectors of vintage Mexican and Taxco jewelry. If you can afford either of these lots, you could grow your vintage Mexican silver collection quickly and add some great names in the process!

Lot 1182 includes 18 pieces by Margot Van Voorhies Carr (Margot de Taxco):

MARGOT OF TAXCO SILVER JEWELRY Eighteen pieces, many with enamel; Volute-link suite with black and brown enamel; scroll-suite with copper half-beads; coil ear clips with white and brown enamel; confronted wing necklace, blue enamel; enameled fan and leaf earrings; three circular ribbon brooches. 296 gs.” Estimate: $1,000 – $1,500. Matl fringe brooch and earrings with turquoise, coral and amethyst in the Chinese style; Matl amethyst and turquoise necklace; moonstone cufflinks, green stone earrings and volute earrings by Antonio Pineda; two bracelets and three pairs of earrings by Los Castillo; Los Ballesteros link bracelet; Lopez Taxco pink ”opal glass” suite; Lopez scroll collar; unsigned sprung coil bracelet. 520 gs. Amazing vintage Mexican silver alterpiece by MATL

This is quite an interesting looking vintage MATL piece, offered for sale on eBay by a seller in Mexico City who has sold quite a bit of vintage Mexican silver on eBay. It is silver with turquoise, coral, and amethyst.

The seller describes it as “an altar set with turquoise beads and cabochons, coral beads, two carved pieces of white plaster and eight pyramidal carved amethysts; also this piece was worked with applied wire and embossing.”

It is 8 ¼ inches high, 6 3/8 inches wide, 3 inches deep and marked “MATL.”

Matilde Eugenia Poulat, whose trademark was “matl” (Bille Hougart notes that matl is a variation of the Aztec word for water) created intricate designs that were recognizably different from most of her contemporaries. The design of these vintage silver and coral sun earrings is – for Poulat – relatively simple, but brilliant nonetheless.

Among the most-watched auctions for vintage Mexican silver jewelry on eBay right now are some gorgeous pieces from greats such as Matl, Margot de Taxco, and Victoria.

One of them is a sterling silver and gemstone bracelet by Adan Alvaredo, in the style of Matilde Eugenia Poulat (Matl), after 1978, Taxco. Alvarado made jewelry for Rancho Alegre in addition to making his own.
