The July 28th Estate Auction by Kodner Galleries of Dania Beach, Florida includes three separate lots of interest to collectors of vintage Mexican silver jewelry: a Los Ballesteros suite, a Hector Aguilar pin, and a Reveriano and Maria Castillo bracelet.

Vintage Mexican silver jewelry – Reveriano and Maria Castillo (Reveri)

Reveriano Castillo apprenticed with William Spratling at Taller de Las Delicias in Taxco, Mexico from 1934 to 1939. He then joined Hector Aguilar’s Taller Borda, which had been established the same year. Maria, Reveriano’s wife, worked for Los Castillo for ten years.

The couple opened their own taller, Reveri, in 1952 (it closed in 1992). Their unique designs incorporated techniques such as weaving, braiding, married metals, and niello and is highly collectible. Jewelry was their focus, but they created other items as well. Over time their designs became more modern, making for an interesting design evolution.

Two vintage Reveri silver pieces, a dimentional pre-Columbian themed pendant/brooch and a modernist bracelet, are currently for sale on eBay:

Skinner’s Fine Jewelry auction on March 16th (Boston) includes a pair of vintage silver earpendants by Reveri (Reveriano Castillo), one of Mexico’s silver maestros (see last Reveri post here). Love the geometric design of these earrings. And you don’t see Reveri pieces up for auction very often.

Reveriano Castillo (Reveri), another Mexican silver Maestro

It’s a fine thing, having so many Mexican silver maestros from which to choose!

One who is very interesting is Reveriano Castillo. Castillo began his apprenticeship with William Spratling at Taller de Las Delicias in Taxco in 1934 and worked there until 1939. He then joined Taller Borda, established by Hector Aguilar the same year. Reveriano’s wife Maria worked for Los Castillo for ten years. The couple opened their own Taller, Reveri, in 1952 (it closed in 1992). They created designs that are quite unique, including some that incorporated niello and others that featured braiding and weaving. Most of their work was jewelry, but their shop produced some holloware as well. The progression of their designs as they become more modern is fascinating to see.

Reveri designs are really wonderful. The Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks, and Makers’ Marks has several nice examples, along with photographs of their makers’ marks.
