At the moment there’s not much vintage Sanborn’s silver on eBay, but I found this unusual piece offered by a Top-Rated eBay seller. Excerpts rom the seller’s description:

This lighter/lamp was made in Mexico by Frank Sanborns in the 1940’s and was given as a wedding gift to my mother-in-law and has been passed down through the estate…is in excellent vintage condition throughout and appears to have never been filled with oil or lit…There is a cotton like substance inside the lamp to absorb the fuel and an adjustable candle wick at the other end. This maker’s mark, (also called “hallmark” by some), is the earlier mark Frank Sanborns used when he began silver smithing and is clearly legible on the base and was a mark used before the three cat or owl mark found on later pieces. This lamp weighs 3.4 ounces and measures 3” to top of snake handle, 3 13/16” handle to tip, 1 3/4” across fuel bowl and 1 5/8” across the base.

Additional Information & Circa: Sanborns was founded in downtown Mexico City by two brothers from California in 1903 as a pharmacy. By the 1920s, it had expanded into an important and fashionable store with several branches, including the famous 18th Century palace, the so-called House of Tiles in which Sanborns hired Social Realist painter Jose Clemente Orozco to create a major mural. During the heyday of Mexican modern silver design (1930s-40s), Sanborns commissioned pieces from important studios in Taxco and elsewhere, impressing the retailer’s name on the pieces instead of that of the artist or studio. Whether this piece was designed by Spratling, one of his apprentices or some other studio, it does show his influence in the mix of modern aesthetics with traditional symbols; Circa 1940.

The great Fred Davis took over management of Sanborn’s in Mexico City in 1933 and helped Frank Sanborn increase the selection of jewelry and other silver wares offered in the store. Sanborn’s had the best selection of high-quality silver from across Mexico. Certainly Sanborn’s helped introduce both Mexicans and tourists to the finely crafted silver jewelry and silverware created by the country’s artisans. Here are some vintage pieces of Sanborn silverware currently up for auction:
