Born in Taxco in 1929, Sigfrido “Sigi” Pineda began as an apprentice silversmith at the age of 10. He acquired skills and gained experience through his work with Los Castillo, Salvador Teran, and Felipe Martinez, eventually becoming Margot de Taxco’s go-to guy for enameling. In 1952, Pineda opened his own shop and has become especially well-known for his modernist sensibility and attention to detail. (You can see hallmarks and work examples here. As one dealer has written, “He is responsible for influencing the Mexican-Modernism art movement, and creating a style so distinct that people identify his work immediately.” Sigi Pineda is possibly one of the last of the great maestros of Mexican silver, continuing to work today.

At the time of this posting, vintage Mexican silver jewelry for sale included a modernist necklace by Antonio Pineda, a sterling and amethyst necklace and earring set by Antonio Pineda (originally purchased in the 19502 from the maestro himself), a “Massive Architectonic Modernist” silver and tiger’s eye bracelet, and a modern cuff and earrings by Sigi Pineda.

As noted in Sigi Pineda: Master of Modern, Sigi Pineda embraced Modernism and has created many extraordinary pieces over the years. Some of them (a suite of three pieces) are offered as a lot in an auction coming up on Sunday:

The suite is part of the Winter Estates Auction at Neal Auction Company in New Orleans. It’s on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 10:00 AM CST. Here’s the description of the lot (#882):

A Mexican Sterling Silver Necklace, Bracelet and Earring Suite, Sigfrido Pineda (b. 1929), marked “Sigi, Tasco, Sterling Made in Mexico, Eagle 3 and 258″; swirl motif, the collar necklace and cuff bracelet featuring Sigi’s characteristic hinge incorporated into the design, the earrings with screw back. Estimated Price: $600 – $800

Modernism, also known as the Modern Movement, marked a conscious break with the past and was one of the dominant expressions of design practice, production, and theory in the 20th century. In modern design we see a deliberate departure from tradition; innovative forms of expression arose as artists focused on the intrinsic qualities of their media (e.g., line, form, and colour). They manipulated abstract forms, played with space and light, and drew attention to the processes and materials used in their work.

The great designers working in Mexico in the 20th century included several who embraced Modernism, with Sigi Pineda among the best. In Sigi Pineda: Looking to the Future, Sheila Pamfiloff and Javier Olivares note that “Sigi’s version of organic modernism was inspirational in developing and establishing a new design sensibility in Taxco, Mexican modernism, adding to the established Mexican art vocabulary.” Describing his work on her website, Carole A. Berk writes “For Modernist design and superior craftsmanship Sigi is the one to collect. In my opinion his work is undervalued.”

If you haven’t already seen this necklace, offered by top-rated eBay seller* hilandlass, take a look before it’s gone.

: Vintage Sigi Pineda biomorphic necklace offered by hilandlass

Here is part of the seller’s description:

This necklace is masterfully crafted of heavy gauge sterling silver in a very unique and artistic biomorphic motif. This design is known as “Peas in a Pod Boomerang” and the identical Sigi necklace was featured in the exhibition “Maestros de Plata: William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance” ~ it is pictured on page 53, Figure 78, in the companion book to the exhibition which was authored by one of the world’s leading authorities on Mexican silver, Penny Morrill. The front of the necklace has a central pendant (3-1/4″ long and width/drop is 2-1/2″) that is a pod shaped boomerang that has four graduated sizes of large silver spheres. There are concave linear links on either side of the central pendant that complete the necklace. The clasp is a tongue and box closure that works perfectly and closes with a crisp ‘click’. The recesses of the design are heavily oxidized which lends depth and dimension to the design. The silver has a warm, age earned patina. This is a highly collectible, original SIGI PINEDA art-to-wear necklace ~ a “must have” for any serious vintage Taxco silver collector!
