Renowned silver maestro Sigfrido (SIGI) Pineda began his long, award-winning career when he began working for Los Castillo while still a teenager. After working with Salvador Teran and then with Felipe Martinez at Piedra y Plata Pineda went on to become the head of the enameling workshop at Margot de Taxco. In 1952 he opened his own shop, Plateros, later changing it to SIGI. Pineda is now in his 80′s and continues to design jewelry today.

A pair of Sigi Pineda bear claw earrings is included in a lot (Lot 991) of vintage Mexican silver earrings to be auctioned at the June Estate Catalogue Auction by Sloans & Kenyon, Chevy Chase, MD on June 20th.

Two lots of vintage Mexican silver jewelry are included in Rago Arts’ Discovery Auction on June 18th at 10 a.m. Some of the most beloved creators of Mexican silver jewelry are represented in these lots.

Lot 1412 (shown above), “CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN SILVER JEWELRY,” consists of eighteen pieces including brooches, pendants, rings, bracelets and a necklace, all with various stones. Artists include Tono, Los Castillos, Sigi, Ballesteros, etc. 320.7 gs., necklace 16″ x 3/4″ Estimate: $200 – $300; starting bid $100.

Skinner’s Fine Jewelry Auction in Boston on June 15th includes a number of pieces of vintage Mexican silver jewelry that will most definitely be of interest to collectors.

Among the items to be auctioned are a Modernist Mexican sterling silver bracelet by Sigi Pineda (Lot 50), a Lopez sterling silver bracelet (Lot 44), a Maricela silver brooch (included with other vintage silver jewelry in Lot 42), and a sterling silver and amethyst bracelet by Horacio de la Parra together with a pair of silver and amethyst earpendants, signed Farfan Taxco (Lot 55).

Auctioneer’s description of Lot 55

Sterling Silver and Amethyst Bracelet, Horacio de la Parra, Mexico D.F., c. 1940s, the bracelet bezel-set with large amethyst cabochons within scrolling frames, joined by links with high relief dome motifs, signed; together with a pair of silver and amethyst earpendants, signed Farfan, Taxco. Note: De la Parra supplied work for William Spratling and Hector Aguilar, and was active under his own name in the 1930s and 40s. He founded the firm Conquistador in 1946. Estimate $250-350.

In the introduction to Sigi Pineda: Looking to the Future by Sheila Pamfiloff and Javier (Javi) Olivares in Modern Silver Magazine, Sheila Pamfiloff notes that Sigi ”developed his own style in the early 1950′s, approaching a more international flavor to his work than his contemporaries and predecessors who were exploring symbolic Mexican themes. Sigi’s version of organic modernism was inspirational in developing and establishing a new design sensibility in Taxco, Mexican modernism, adding to the established Mexican art vocabulary.”

For Modernist design and superior craftsmanship Sigi is the one to collect. In my opinion his work is undervalued.

William Spratling, Hector Aguilar, Sigi Pineda, Sanborns, and Maciel are just a few of the marks you might encounter if you’re on the prowl for this type of vintage Mexican silver.
