This vintage sterling silver woven basket made for Tiffany by Mexico City’s Tane Orfebres appeals to a range of collectors, so it’s no surprise that bidding has already begun for this item at the Richard D. Hatch & Associates (Flat Rock, N.C.) November 19th auction.

As Bille Hougart notes in The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks, “Tane Orfebres has been a prominent silver house in Mexico City since the early 1950′s.”

The Winter Fine & Decorative Art auction by Cowan’s Auctions (Cincinnati, OH) on February 20th includes a 20th century Tane sterling silver tea service. Description from Cowan’s:

Mexican, 20th century. A sterling silver tea service which includes a swelled form hot water pot and stand, tea pot, covered cream and sugar, waste bowl and a large handled tray, all with vertical lobed panels and footed bases. Tray: lg. 30, wd. 22 in; Hot water server: ht. 13, lg. 12 in. Marked, Tane Sterling / Made in Mexico, Sterling .925. Total silver weight, 317.81 ozt (9885 g). Condition: Minor dent to small teapot. (EST $4000-$6000)

Tane Orfebres is a well-known name in Mexican silver. As noted by Bille Hougart in The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (pp 195-196):

“Tane Orfebres has been a prominent silver house in Mexico City since the early 1950′s…Founded by Joseph and Rosa Vilner, Pedro Leites’ Tane makes and sell fine silverwork, including some hand wrought reproductions of some of Mexico’s most famous pieces (Fodor’s, 1979). Wilhelm (1962) commented that ‘for modern silver, this has become the silver shop favored by those who know Mexico City best. Fine work – new designs.’ Most (but not all) items marked Tane also carry the mark of a silversmith…”
