In June 1952, Popular Mechanics published Mexico’s City of Silver by Michael Day. Reading an article such as this, written during the heyday of William Spratling, Los Castillo, and the other great designers and artisans working in Mexico, provides a contemporary perspective or feeling - very different from reading an article or book written many years later.

Intended for the Popular Mechanics audience that wants to know how things are made, the article explores techniques such as metales casados and mosaic inlay, and it’s accompanied by photographs of the silversmiths at work. Thanks to Google Books, we can see the original in all of its 1950s glory. Highly recommended!

One of them is a sterling silver and gemstone bracelet by Adan Alvaredo, in the style of Matilde Eugenia Poulat (Matl), after 1978, Taxco. Alvarado made jewelry for Rancho Alegre in addition to making his own.

Treadway Toomey Galleries’ web site lists unsold lots from some of its auctions, including the December 2009 20th Century Art & Design Auction. That auction included a piece mentioned in a post here in November 2009, a vintage Los Castillo letter opener, with copper and malachite. According to the TTG website, the piece is still available.

From Treadway Toomey:

Description: Los Castillo Serpent letter opener, Mexico, copper and malachite, stamped “Los Castillo Taxco Hecho en Mexico”, 1.75″w x 9″l, very good condition. Price: $150. Condition Report: Surface scratches. Small dents to edge of letter opener. One center stone is a little loose and wiggles, but does not fall out.

It’s always fun to come across information about the silver maestros of Mexico. Not surprisingly, William Spratling brings back the most results in online searches. For example….

Tally Ho! is a rather esoteric (and fascinating) blog that recently posted about William Spratling living with William Faulkner at 624 Pirates Alley in New Orleans in 1925. Another post at the same blog shows some wonderful old pictures (some of them are vintage postcards) of Pirates Alley.

The Kemper Museum has a fine-looking 1951 silver necklace with pendant by Spratling, part of its collection and a gift of Carol Jean Schoelkopf, which you can see here.

1stdibs (tagline: “The Most Beautiful Things On Earth”) is a website that will help you spend your disposable income (if you have any left these days) in no time. It’s a showcase for a number of upscale galleries and dealers – jewelry, watches, furniture, lighting, haute couture, and more.
