The butterfly ornament is attributed by the seller to Ana Nunez de Brilanti of Taxco (Victoria) due to the well-known butterfly design, the Eagle 12 stamped on the piece, and the font style of the sterling mark.

The pair of sterling silver hair combs with scalloped tops and wavy teeth are by Taxco artisan Rafael Ortega. They each measure 2 1/2″ x 2 1/4″

The third ornament is circa 1955. It is artist signed with hand engraving and cut work at the top and marked SLO Hecho en Mexico 925 Eagle 22 with a crown symbol.

One of them is a sterling silver and gemstone bracelet by Adan Alvaredo, in the style of Matilde Eugenia Poulat (Matl), after 1978, Taxco. Alvarado made jewelry for Rancho Alegre in addition to making his own.

This is a beautiful copper three-dimensional shadow box of a piece by Ana Maria Nunez de Brilante, aka Victoria. It was made to be a pin/pendant, but the latch is broken somehow, and the pin won’t come loose. I presume this is an easy fix, but I’m afraid to mess with it! In any event, it looks fantastic as a pendant. It is large – imposing! – and measures 2.25″ x 2.75″ and, as it is made in two pieces – a flat back and curved cut-out front, it has a lot of depth to it. The rest of the pin is in beautiful vintage condition. It is hallmarked “Victoria Mexico Taxco Copper 125.”

Mexican Jewelry & Metal Art, by Leslie Pina (2009), is an extremely useful reference book if you want to learn more. More than 1000 color photographs accompanied by detailed captions and value ranges, a bibliography, an illustrated glossary, and illustrated hallmarks are included.

Pina has written or co-authored many different books aimed at collectors, including  Mexican Silver Jewelry Details(2008), one of the most complete reference books on this topic.

Less attention has been paid to other metal objects – silver and otherwise - made by the same designers so well-known for their jewelry.  Hector Aguilar, Salvador Teran, Los Castillos, Miguel Martinez, Sigi Pineda, Victoria, and Bernice Goodspeed are just a few of the designers who went beyond silver jewelry.

Mexican Jewelry & Metal Art, by Leslie Pina, is a great book that goes beyond jewelry to show the range and creativity in metal work of designers we mostly associate with Mexican silver jewelry. It has detailed captions with value ranges accompanying 1000+ color photographs and includes a bibliography, index, illustrated glossary, and illustrated hallmarks – highly recommended!
