Taxco native and Los Castillo cousin Salvador Teran is known for his metal and mosaic tilework. He created sculpture, wall art, jewelry and other objects working with various metals and often incorporated abstract and surrealistic human and animal shapes in his creations.

This iconic 1950s Salvador Teran brass and mosaic pitcher with two cups is one of several Salvador Teran creations recently found at VandM.com:

The set is offered by Hacienda, a dealer listed on vandm.com. VandM.com is an online marketplace representing dealers of unique antique, vintage and contemporary furniture, lighting, textiles, home accessories, and art from around the world. From the listing description:

Wonderful pitcher and two cups by maestro Salvador Vaca Teran. The pitcher is a famous Salvador design depicting two hands encircling it. The two tall cups depict warriors with jaguars. All three pieces are signed in script “Salvador”, also marked “Handwrought”, “Hecho en Mexico” and with design number. All pieces in excellent vintage condition. Circa 1950s.

Great find: vintage Hubert Harmon cufflinks

Compared to many famous expatriate designers who created jewelry and other metalware objects in mid-twentieth century Mexico, Hubert Harmon’s stay was relatively brief. He worked first in Taxco, then Mexico City. Harmon and his wife Louise later moved to the French Riviera.

Harmon’s light-hearted designs included his famous foot tray and the well-known poodle pin. In the eBay listing featured below, Harmon’s whimsical design style takes the form of horses, created in brass.

From the seller’s description:

Each one has the representation of a horse seen in perspective; from the tail to the head. Each cufflink is joined together to a four pointed star with a small chain…Each one measures: 1 X 1 in.One is marked as follows: MEXICO. And the other: MEXICO, HUBERT HARMON, MEXICO. These pieces are in excellent vintage condition, they have only some minor surface scratches and dents common to any worn vintage piece.

Mexico’s Salvador Teran used mosaics and brass extensively in his work, much of which is easily identified as mid-century modern. The Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks and Makers’ Marks has photographs of some of Teran’s work, along with his hallmarks. Some great pieces were sold earlier this month at Jackson’s Auction.

Salvador Teran was born in Taxco, Mexico and was a cousin to Los Castillos. He worked with Los Castillos for a number of years and then opened a workshop in Mexico City in 1952. Teran, who is especially well known for his mosaic work, frequently worked with brass. His motifs ranged from Aztec to modernist to whimsical. A number of pieces by Teran are currently available on eBay:
