Sigi Pineda bear claw earrings included in upcoming auction

Renowned silver maestro Sigfrido (SIGI) Pineda began his long, award-winning career when he began working for Los Castillo while still a teenager. After working with Salvador Teran and then with Felipe Martinez at Piedra y Plata Pineda went on to become the head of the enameling workshop at Margot de Taxco. In 1952 he opened his own shop, Plateros, later changing it to SIGI. Pineda is now in his 80′s and continues to design jewelry today.

A pair of Sigi Pineda bear claw earrings is included in a lot (Lot 991) of vintage Mexican silver earrings to be auctioned at the June Estate Catalogue Auction by Sloans & Kenyon, Chevy Chase, MD on June 20th.

Sale 51 Lot 991 PAIR SIGI PINEDA BEAR CLAW STERLING SILVER EARRINGS, Together with three additional vintage pairs of Mexican inlaid sterling silver earrings including one pair depicting a warrior with inlaid tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl.

Los Castillo is one of the great silver families of Taxco. The business was begun by the four Castillo brothers, who originally worked with William Spratling. They were known for their revival of ancient techniques such as the fusing of different metals and were innovative designers of sterling, mixed metal and other pieces. Don Antonio Castillo was the head of Los Castillo until he died in 2000. Today Los Castillo continues on and has maintained its reputation for innovation and design.
