Jean Puiforcat (aliases: Jean Elisée Puiforcat; Jean Puiforçat) was born in Paris in 1897. He served in World War II and then worked as an apprentice and designer at his family’s firm of silversmiths. He also studied sculpture with Louis-Aimé Lejeune.

Puiforcat designed silver objects in the Art Deco style and used gilding, decoration in other materials (e.g. rosewood, ivory, onyx, lapis lazuli) and decorative bands of ribbing or reeding in his work. In 1929 he helped found the Union des Artistes Modernes. Most of Puiforcat’s designs were for tableware, but he also exhibited other forms of silver and sculpture.

When World War II began, Puiforcat left France and in 1941 settled in Mexico, where he opened a studio and exported his silver. In 1945 he returned to Paris, but died shortly after his return.

Puiforcat is considered to be one of the twentieth century’s great silver tableware designers. In Perfection: Jean E. Puiforcat’s Designs For Silver Gail S. Davidson notes that his works “appeal to the intellect as well as the senses.” Discussing Puiforcat’s work in Mexico, Davidson writes that Puiforcat “produced new models inspired by Mexican motifs and incoporating more flamboyant decorative details.”

From the auctioneer’s description:

Antonio Pineda was born in Taxco, Mexico to an old Taxquenian family in 1919. At the age of 14 he apprenticed with William Spratling. After eight years in Spratling’s studio, and becoming a master silversmith in his own right, Pineda opened his own workshop. His international reputation was established when his work was exhibited along side that of Georg Jensen and other renowned modernist silversmiths at the 1944 exhibition of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Pineda’s entire body of work displayed at that seminal show was purchased by Gump’s, which established a long standing relationship between Pineda and the high-end retailer. In 1953 he won the Presidential Prize at the first National Silver Fair and by 1956 his operation employed over 160 people. Pineda founded the Silver Museum in Taxco in 1988.

Antonio Pineda is best known for his modernist jewelry designs incorporating gemstones in unusual and creative settings. Utilitarian pieces such as hollowware and flatware sets by Pineda are rare. Provenance: Property from a Private Arizona Collection

Estimated Price: $7,000 – $10,000. Condition: Weight does not include steel-bladed dinner knives. Very good condition overall. General light marks, scratches, rubbing and wear commensurate with age and use. Not monogrammed.

At the moment there’s not much vintage Sanborn’s silver on eBay, but I found this unusual piece offered by a Top-Rated eBay seller. Excerpts rom the seller’s description:

This lighter/lamp was made in Mexico by Frank Sanborns in the 1940’s and was given as a wedding gift to my mother-in-law and has been passed down through the estate…is in excellent vintage condition throughout and appears to have never been filled with oil or lit…There is a cotton like substance inside the lamp to absorb the fuel and an adjustable candle wick at the other end. This maker’s mark, (also called “hallmark” by some), is the earlier mark Frank Sanborns used when he began silver smithing and is clearly legible on the base and was a mark used before the three cat or owl mark found on later pieces. This lamp weighs 3.4 ounces and measures 3” to top of snake handle, 3 13/16” handle to tip, 1 3/4” across fuel bowl and 1 5/8” across the base.

While a number of books have looked at Mexican silver jewelry, less has been written about other metal objects, often made by the very same designers. Mexican Jewelry & Metal Art helps to fill that gap, with detailed captions with value ranges, 1000+ color photographs, a bibliography, index, illustrated glossary, and illustrated hallmarks.

The beginning of World War II saw a number of European designers head for Mexico. French silver artist Jean Puiforcat, one of the 20th Century’s finest designers of silver hollowware, was among them. Puiforcat spent the war years in Mexico, where pre-Columbian art served as an inspiration.

This biographical information about Jean Puiforcat is excerpted from Oxford Art Online:

(b Paris, 5 Aug 1897; d Paris, 20 Oct 1945).
After service in World War I, he joined the family firm of silversmiths, working as an apprentice and designer. Concurrently he studied sculpture with Louis-Aimé Lejeune (1884–1969). Puiforcat designed silver objects in the Art Deco style as simple volumes with smooth profiles and surfaces and proportions based on geometric ratios. He was a founder-member of the Union des artistes modernes. His designs were mostly for tableware, but in 1934 he exhibited liturgical silver for the first time, and the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (1937), Paris, included his stone sculpture of René Descartes (The Hague, Maison France). At the onset of World War II he left France, eventually settling in Mexico (1941). He opened a studio in 1942 and exported his silver mostly to the USA. He returned to Paris in 1945 but died immediately after his arrival.

Antiquitiesweb notes:

In Mexico, Puiforcat produced new models inspired by Mexican motifs and incorporating more flamboyant decorative details, such as studs and scalloped bands. As Puiforcat said, a piece of tableware had to accomplish its function, “but it is also a companion in our interior….A work of art must in its modest sphere elevate the soul by its beauty.”

It is often possible to find work by Puiforcat, both French and Mexican, on eBay:
