…brilliantly designed Martini shaker by Los Castillo Taxco featuring a leaning pitcher and the most amazing bird handle imaginable. This pitcher includes its rare original spoon. The quality of this metal work is of the highest caliber. The pitcher and spoon are silverplate. The bird appears to be copper. Both the spoon handle and the back of the bird are inlaid with a turquoise or malachite material. Both the pitcher and spoon are marked TAXCO LOS CASTILLO HAND WROUGHT. The pitcher measures about 10 1/2″ tall, the spoon is about 12″ long, and the bird handle is about 7 1/2″ long.

William Spratling Mexican sterling silver pitcher, bulbous form fitted with shaped rosewood handle(eagle profile) with rivet decoration around lower handle, impressed “Spratling Made In Mexico” and “Spratling Silver”. Overall very good condition with a slight dent to rim. 6 1/2″ H. Circa 1940-1944. Estimate $900 – $1,200. Starting Bid $450

Chato (Jorge) Castillo was one of the four Castillo brothers who studied with William Spratling and went on to open their own workshop, Los Castillo. As Penny Morrill has written, “For Chato Castillo, a bracelet, brooch, necklace or belt buckle could serve as the substitute for a painter’s canvas.” It is no wonder that works signed by Chato are in great demand among collectors of vintage Mexican silver. No doubt there will be many watching the auction for this mixed metals bowl by Chato Castillo on Sunday, May 16th in the Braswell Galleries’ Estate Auction.
