Earth Day will soon be here, but doing what we can to protect our planet is an everyday matter. One reason (out of many!) to love vintage jewelry (and vintage clothing and accessories) is that re-using something requires fewer resources. So whenever you choose vintage over new, you’re taking positive action.

Vintage Mexican Silver is also taking positive action by joining the “my blog is carbon neutral” program. An average blog or website is responsible for generating about 8 pounds of carbon emissions per year (caused primarly by energy usage from mainframe computers, servers, and their cooling systems). One tree helps neutralize carbon emissions at the rate of about 11 pounds per year. So, the planting of a tree neutralizes the impact of this blog. A tree is being planted for every blog and web site that participates in the “my blog is carbon neutral” program. Vintage Mexican Silver is proud to participate!

If you want to learn more about the program, or about how to make your blog or site carbon neutral, visit My blog is carbon neutral.

During World War II metals were in short supply in the USA, and many jewelry companies, such as Coro, contracted with Mexican silversmiths to produce jewelry on their behalf. Here is a vintage Hector Aguilar for Coro silver bracelet I found on Bonanzle, offered by the seller Claudia’s Novelties:

Photograph by Claudia’s Novelties on Bonanzle

Here is the seller’s description:

Masterfully crafted and designed in the early 1940s in Taxco Mexico in an Art deco Style. It is comprised of 7 slightly curved three dimensional triangular links. The clasp is the push locking type and it works perfectly. In 1943 Gerald Rosenberg, the Coro Jewelry Co, entered into a business arrangement with Hector Aguilar, Taller Borda to design and produce jewelry for Coro. It is hallmarked Coro, Made In Mexico, Silver. This hallmark was used by Taller Borda from 1943-1950. It is in superior vintage condition with age associated wear with some lighr scratches to the front of the silver links but no damage, needing nothing more than a gentle polishing.

Coro jewelry made by Hector Aguilar’s Taller Borda was made from about 1943-1947. Marks for this jewelry are shown at the Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks here. Take a look at other Mexican silver pieces created for Coro in a photo album here.

One of my favorites is a suite consisting of a necklace, pendant, pin, earrings and bracelet by Margot de Taxco (Margot van Voorhies Carr Castillo) that was appraised in a 2005 episode. At the time, the appraiser estimated the value at about $3,000. With the value of vintage Mexican silver jewelry headed nowhere but up, imagine what the value would be today, four years later…..

A couple of months ago, Kovels.com noted that “Modernist silver jewelry is hot, especially Mexican pieces by William Spratling and American pieces by Art Smith. But prices are getting high, so some collectors are searching for Siam jewelry, the tourist jewelry made in Thailand in the 1960s and later. Pieces are usually silver with black enamel decorations of Siamese gods, boats, and other traditional designs….”

For those who think vintage Mexican silver is becoming too pricey, there are many opportunities to acquire vintage Siam silver jewelry and vintage Siam niello jewelry at fairly reasonable prices. The photograph above, for example, is for a lot of 3 vintage Siam bracelets and a vintage Taxco silver pin. The entire lot was expected to sell for $75.00 to $ 125.00, but sold for the starting bid amount of $ 50.00.

The black and silver bracelets are examples of old Siam niello jewelry, and the white and silver bracelet is enameled.

An online auction for a lot consisting of a Siam silver bracelet, buckle, pair of earrings, sterling silver Thailand bangle, and a silver metal Egyptian bangle is coming up on June 11th, if you want to check it out. The starting bid is £14. The Siam/Thailand pieces all appear to be niello.

Photograph: Eastbourne Auction Rooms

The same auction house also has this lot to be auctioned on June 11th: Collection of Indian and Siam silver including a tankard, mustard, salts, etc, the largest item 7cm high. The starting bid is £14.

Photograph: Eastbourne Auction Rooms

If you’re willing to expand your silver horizons, these auctions could be a good way to start.

Wayjo Vintage, an eBay seller with 100% positive feedback, has a lovely silver leaf dish by Hector Aguilar. From the seller’s description:

“The piece measures 5″ long x 4 1/2″ wide and sits on a coiled silver wire stem base. It’s in very good vintage condition with normal surface wear. There are a few small spots of tarnish that you might want to polish out. We’ll leave that to the winner. There’s no damage that we can see. It weighs 124 grams. Hallmarked as shown. Taxco 940, with Aguilar’s conjoined HA mark.”

If you’d like to see an enlarged photo or other photos of this Aguilar silver leaf dish, click on the image in the box:

Hector Aguilar, of course, is one of the great names in Mexican silver and Taxco. He managed William Spratling’s Taller de Las Delicias from 1936-1939 and then opened his own workshop. Aguilar is one of the most popular and collectible of the vintage Mexican silver designers.

The other day I came across the name of Matilde Poulat, a Mexican silversmith with whom I was not familiar. I decided to learn about her and to find some of her work to show here.

Senorita Matilde Eugenia Poulat of Mexico City (Matl) attended art school and was a classmate of the great Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She began her career as a painter and designer and began making jewelry in 1934. She created pieces that feature delicate textured detailing and often used tiny coral and turquoise stones in them. Jewelry created in Poulat’s workshop was signed “Matl.”

Her jewelry has a very rich look and has been described as having “Mexican feeling without recourse to any definite Mexican motifs.” It has also been said that her work may be the most intricate to come out of the Mexican Silver Renaissance. Much of the “Renaissance” work was modernist.

Before she died in 1960, Poulat trained her nephew, Ricardo Salas, as a jeweler; he continued to create pieces in the Matl style for many years.

The blog My Vintage Taxco Silver showcases vintage Taxco silver jewelry belonging to “Tia Gema,” who writes it. She has some great pieces, and photographs are included. One of my favorites is a Matl (Matilde Poulat) necklace.

Additional information about Matl and photographs of her jewelry are available at the Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks, and Makers’ Marks. The wonderful book Mexican Jewelry by Mary L. Davis and Greta Pack has quite a bit of information about Senorita Poulat and good photos as well.

I found some wonderful Matl jewelry on eBay:
