Another interesting lot at Century 20: Modern Design Auction (January 15) by Palm Beach Modern Auctions is a sterling silver and amethyst bowl from Sanborns, “in the manner of William Spratling.”

Markings: Sanborns, Sterling, Mexico
Country of Origin & Materials: Mexico; sterling silver, amethyst quartz

Additional Information & Circa: Sanborns was founded in downtown Mexico City by two brothers from California in 1903 as a pharmacy. By the 1920s, it had expanded into an important and fashionable store with several branches, including the famous 18th Century palace, the so-called House of Tiles in which Sanborns hired Social Realist painter Jose Clemente Orozco to create a major mural. During the heyday of Mexican modern silver design (1930s-40s), Sanborns commissioned pieces from important studios in Taxco and elsewhere, impressing the retailer’s name on the pieces instead of that of the artist or studio. Whether this piece was designed by Spratling, one of his apprentices or some other studio, it does show his influence in the mix of modern aesthetics with traditional symbols; Circa 1940.

Architect Margo Grant Walsh’s silver collection has been called “remarkable” and “one of the most important collections, anywhere, of silver and metalwork from the late 19th century to the present.” If you are new to collecting silver or are not aware of Walsh, it’s worth some time to learn about her collection and her approach.

The exhibit Designed by Architects: Metalwork from the Margo Grant Walsh Collection at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts took place in 2008, but sixteen images from the exhibit, along with background information, are available for online viewing. The images include works by William Spratling: a sterling silver and rosewood coffeepot, a sterling silver and azure-malachite bracelet, and rosewood and silver salad servers.

William Spratling Mexican sterling silver pitcher, bulbous form fitted with shaped rosewood handle(eagle profile) with rivet decoration around lower handle, impressed “Spratling Made In Mexico” and “Spratling Silver”. Overall very good condition with a slight dent to rim. 6 1/2″ H. Circa 1940-1944. Estimate $900 – $1,200. Starting Bid $450

William Spratling, Hector Aguilar, Sigi Pineda, Sanborns, and Maciel are just a few of the marks you might encounter if you’re on the prowl for this type of vintage Mexican silver.

At the Association Of Small Collectors Of Antique Silver (ASCAS) website, The World of Mexican Silver Salts by Linda Drew includes a number of photographs of William Spratling salt cellars, definitely worth a look if you are interested in this type of vintage Mexican silver. eBay can be a good place to look:

Case Antiques’ January 23rd auction includes a Spratling sterling silver coffee pot auction with the original Spratling y Castillo bill of sale from 1960. How unusual is that!

William Spratling coffee pot, sterling with wooden handle and finial, with stamped mark “William Spratling, Taxco, Mexico” and shield hallmark. Includes original bill of sale from 1960. Condition – Slight indentation on side of rim and one slight dent on spout. 8 1/4″ Height. 21.140 ounce troy total weight.
