Think Twice: New Latin American Jewelry, an exhibit at the Bellevue (Washington) Arts Museum, offers a glimpse of the history of jewelry in Latin America and a comprehensive view of its contemporary development, drawing attention to the unique and innovative ways in which visual artists and jewelry makers born or living in Latin America view and relate, through their work, to such a diverse continent.

Included are more than 130 works by 93 artists from 25 countries. The exhibit focuses on three themes: addressing the region’s past through work completed in the last half of the twentieth century, investigating the fusion of ethnic influences in the area, and delving into the continent’s ever-changing socio-political issues.

Artists such as Enrique Ledesma and William Spratling are among those who exemplify the work that helped shape the path of contemporary jewelry in Latin America and served as inspiration to later generations of jewelry artists.

The oldest piece on display is “Croissant” (1940), a silver necklace with a large rosewood pendant by William Spratling, who is credited with reviving the ancient silver craft in the Mexican mining town of Taxco. Spratling inspired generations of Mexican jewelers to create jewelry in non-European forms with a well-defined national identity. In contrast are the more contemporary pieces such as “Collar para el Coleccionista” (2009) by Costa Rican artist Julieta Odio.

The exhibit runs through October 16 at Bellevue Arts Museum. For information: (425) 519-0770 or www.bellevuearts.org.

A top-rated eBay seller has listed an auction for an unusual wall plaque by William Spratling. Here is the seller’s description:

William Spratling made 6 or 7 different wall plaques and this is one of them. It features a finely detailed sterling silver head of a Mayan. The head is mounted on a wooden frame by a pin, to give a greater feeling of depth and perspective. The wooden frame retains its original black outer rim and its light blue central area. The original owner (who apparently purchased this directly from Spratling in Taxco) put his name on a piece of paper on the back).

While silver might be the first metal that comes to mind for many when they think about William Spratling, The History of Spratling Silver (spratlingsilver.com) reminds us that Spratling worked in a variety of media, including tin:

New information suggests that, contrary to Spratling’s account in his autobiography, File on Spratling, his silver designs were not the major offering in his earliest shop, La Aduana. (Throughout his life, Spratling had financial crises, and at this period, in 1931, his need to create income to cover his minimal living expenses was serious.) La Aduana opened June 27, 1931 and initially the main focus was probably tin ware, copper, weavings and furniture, and to a slighly lesser extent, silver – all designed by Spratling. Silver jewelry and silver objects designed by Spratling became the primary focus of his shop by 1933. The shop, with its weavers, copper and tin smiths and silversmiths, Spratling later said, was “a four ring circus.

If you’d like to see some examples of tin items by Spratling, a database search at spratlingsilver.com yields more than 20 results, including a number of candlelabra and candlesticks. Tin candlelabra by Spratling does reach the market from time to time, and the pair shown in the photograph above are available now at the eBay store of New York’s Lauren Stanley. From the seller’s description:

Being offered is a fine pair of circa 1940 tin candelabra by William Spratling, of Taxco, Mexico, of cut tin at each side of a central column, with chasing and engraving in a floral motif and splayed at base. Dimensions: 9 inches tall by 7 inches wide. No monogram. Marked as illustrated in photo. In excellent condition.

Antique and Vintage Catalogs, an eBay store, offers an excellent reference book for Spratling and Taxco silver aficionados — the 1962 Spratling Taxco Silver Catalog Pricelist.

Included in this reproduction catalog are bracelets, necklaces, rings, cufflinks, and other jewelry; desk accessories; tea and coffee sets; pitchers; flatware and tableware; bowls and trays; a variety of boxes; candlesticks; goblets and tumblers, and much more. Here is how the seller describes the catalog:

We have digitally reproduced our original 1962 29-page catalog at an extremely high resolution, printed the pages on a heavy gloss stock, and bound it between heavy clear covers with a silvery coil. This is not a photocopy – our methods allow us to retain an unusual image clarity and depth of detail. Colors, if any, are daylight-corrected. Some of our fine reproduction catalogs are already in museum research collections.

This reproduction catalog is meant to be a permanent reference. Its true spiral binding, unlike a comb binding, allows this book to remain unharmed when left open at the desired place. The front and back covers are printed on heavy marbled cover stock, protected by sturdy clear vinyl outer covers.
